Club History

In the Spring of 1947, at a dinner party of some Stamford residents, Rockrimmon Country Club was conceived.  Some of Stamford's leading citizens were in attendance.  The conversation turned toward golf.  This group of enterprising men became our founders and went into action planning a new country club with their goal to have it be amongst the finest in New England.

In September, 1947, the founders held their first organizational meeting of a corporation named Long Ridge Enterprises, Inc.  They voted to purchase 218 acres of land on the Stamford/Pound Ridge boundary line, formerly a farm known as "the old Ayers property".  That same group of men also formed another corporation named Rockrimmon Country Club, Inc.  They elected a president and soon had 42 members who owned stock in Long Ridge Enterprises.

Robert Trent Jones, renowned golf course architect was retained to design the first nine holes at a fee of $7,500.  Work on the new golf course proceeded from the time of purchase until the summer of 1949 when nine holes were ready for play.

In 1954, the membership voted to add an additional nine holes to the existing course.  The second nine holes were opened and Rockrimmon became the proud owner of an eighteen hole golf course.

The former Ayers farmhouse, which is now the golf course superintendent's home and faces Long Ridge Road near the exit driveway was used as Rockrimmon's first clubhouse.  A glassed in porch was added as a dining space.  In 1959 a second clubhouse was built and located overlooking the lake.  This structure contained men's and women's locker rooms, a lounge , dining room and kitchen.  Dinners, dances and parties were held regularly.

The present clubhouse was built in 1961 with a major renovation and addition in 1996.

The club today offers golf, tennis, swimming, family and social events and is thriving with over 285 members, 176 of whom are full golf members.
